Spent the day pulling the Weber side draft setup out of the Mini and installing a more traditional SU HIF38. First turn of the key it fired right up and idled smooth. It drove nicely down the road and I haven’t even tuned it. This makes me happy.

Did all this while listening to Indy bump day and even had to use the grinder on the exhaust manifold a bit. Felt manly.

Not not exactly the same but when my weed trimmer died I bought a cheap carb on Amazon popped and on and it immediately fired up and work perfectly. It was so satisfying. This must be that x 1 million

Im a fan of my SU HF4. Constant flow is great. Easy tune. Elegant in its own way. Nothing sounds like a weber but SU style is just easy.

The car immidieately ran better. I adjusted the mixture a bit and got the plugs quickly to the desired color. This was after a couple of months of screwing around with the Weber. It’s still not running perfect. #1 seems to have intermittent spark, so I am working through that next.

Once i put the pertronix in the dizzy, it wss amazing. Start up, Set for advance, clamp it down, done forever. My carb is probably the OE carb from 78 and hasnt been rebuilt ever. Itll get deserved attention. I still wonder about how a keihin would comparitively work. I hear about that once in a while

Dumb question that I can’t find a good answer for: does a pertronix or similar unit remove the need for vacuume advance?

no. its just a maintenance free magnetic trigger under the cap instead of points you have to adjust and file/sand. once the dizzy’s timing degrees are set, you forget about it forever. The package is the dizzy unit and a coil. That’s it.
